I studied Industrial Mechanical Engineering at Stellenbosch University before moving to London to work. After 7 years in London doing project management at a Global Asset Manager, I returned to South Africa to be closer to my siblings.

During my time in London I became thoroughly convinced of the need for South Africans to work at improving the living conditions of the majority of people in South Africa while at the same time preaching the gospel of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. After all, what does it help someone if you say to him do not worry about your empty stomach brother, Jesus loves you, yet we don't move to help him. By the same token what does it help someone if you help him to gain the whole world as profit if at the end of the day they loose their soul?

As such I believe that Christians in South Africa need to proclaim the gospel while allowing their actions to back up what they are proclaiming. U-turn was therefore an ideal match in that it works very hard at not only proclaiming the gospel but also living out our faith in practical life changing social action. This continues to motivate me to work at U-turn and also shapes the way that U-turn interacts with vulnerable people in society. I am married to Jane and we have 2 boys, Thomas aged 4 and Daniel aged 2.

Robin Murray
Office Administrator and Treasurer
Robin Stone

Seeing as I accepted one stone on my finger a few months another Stone had to make way for a Murray a few weeks ago!

I am the Treasurer and Office Administrator. Besides looking after our finances, I am responsible for many of the practical aspects of the day to day running of Uturn. I am a Chartered Accountant by profession and joined Uturn at the beginning of 2007 after a few years of working as an accountant overseas and in Cape Town. I love being part of the church family at St Stephens, and am involved in studying the Bible with young professionals. I get excited about 4x4's, my nephew, roast potatoes, fancy dress parties and seeing people respond to Christ's amazing love in practical service and love for others.

I retired from the motor industry after 45 years. As a Christian believing that my love for Christ must show in works I find U Turn an ideal way of accomplishing this.

My personal interests include watching cricket, rugby, ballet and music.

My name is John Baloyi and I come from Pretoria. I started working at U Turn in July 2007. It is the first time I am working for a Christian organisation and I am enjoying every bit of it. I am married to Francinah and we are blessed with three lovely kids.

Dylan Marais
Shelter operations
Dylan Marais

Hi - My name is Dylan Marais. I started working at U-Turn in June 2007. This is the first time I am working for a Christian company and I am loving it! I manage the Shelter operations and am on duty most days from 14.00 to 22.00. During the day I attend a Theological Training College. When I am not studying or working, I play the bagpipes. I also enjoy ballroom dancing, Latin and salsa as well as mountain climbing. One of the things I enjoy most about working at U-Turn is getting to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and teach the Bible to people who would normally never hear about Jesus.

I am from England but have now been working at the U-turn shelter in Cape Town for two years. Before I was married I lived at the shelter, but moved on successfully with my wife Debbie. I co-ordinate the first phase operations of U-turn.

Cooking @ the shelter
Helen Joseph

I have been working at U Turn for three years. Most of my time is spent at the shelter, where you will see me cooking meals for all who pass through the doors.

I have been married to Derek for 9 years and together we have 2 children.

I love working with people. Working at U Turn has also given me many opportunities to share the goodness of the Lord.

Sean Parker
3rd phase work
Sean Parker

Hi, I recently joined the U Turn team. In 2007 graduated from a Bible College in Cape Town called George Whitefield College. Before this I was living and working in England.

My work will focus mainly on the third phase work, training residents with computer skills and later helping them find employment in the business sector. I will also be involved in follow-up after residents have left the shelter. While I do this he will mentor appointed residents on a one-on-one basis.

While working at U Turn I hope to gain specific knowledge on how to make a gospel response to the South African homelessness crisis.

In my spare time I enjoy playing hockey and engaging chats over coffee.
